Against the other converters.

Cinder is not the only local tool, and it is not free. The difference is the wheel under the cursor.

Online converters

Convertio, CloudConvert, and iLovePDF ask you to upload the file. Often an account, a size limit, or a free cap. Cinder reads the file on the PC and writes the result beside it. The original does not leave.

The right-click menu

File Converter converts from the File Explorer right-click menu. It is free, with no paid tier. If it uses the old context menu, Windows 11 often hides it behind “Show more options.” Cinder opens when you hold Shift, Alt, or Ctrl: the wheel appears under the cursor.

Filee

Filee is free and open source. You hold a key, drag the files, and drop them on a format. Conversion stays on the PC. Filee covers more formats than Cinder, including HEIC. Cinder does not drag the file to a target: the wheel opens where the cursor is, for that one file.

Windowed apps

Format Factory and XnConvert are free and open in their own window. XnConvert goes further on images, including HEIC and AVIF, which Cinder does not. Cinder stays on the desktop or in File Explorer.

Who Cinder is for

Someone already on Windows 10 or 11, or on macOS 12, on the desktop, in File Explorer, or in Finder, who wants to pick a format without leaving the file. Twenty successful files are free, then €29.99 once, with no subscription. On Windows, ffmpeg is included. On macOS, it comes from Homebrew.

Who Cinder is not for

Linux, HEIC, AVIF, PAGES, a whole folder at once, or a free tool with no limit. Crop, redact, and annotate are not in this version. Page images of PDFs and slides are made on Windows.
